When one door closes, another opens; but we often
look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door
that we do not see the one which has opened for us."

"It might have come with the thrust of a sword . . . and that would be
death . . . But it came with a strange slow thrust of peace, the dark thrust
of peace and a ponderous, primordial tenderness, such as made the world
in the beginning."

—D. H. Lawrence

Mirages

Holy fire spotlights mirages of life in the twisted realms of

the night

Old souled men clamber her streets in search of cheap wine

Young couples grope awkwardly offering their bodies to the

ruthless gods

Living in fits and starts

Under a tyranny of darkness

Following a path 'lumined by lightening and stained with

bloody tears

By D.E. Griffith

Vice-President George Bush visited UNCC on
Wednesday July 9, 1980. Bush was in Charlotte
to raise money to eliminate debts he has occurred
in an unsuccessful bid for the Republican
Presidential nomination. He spent much of his
time on campus discussing the joys of jogging
with faculty members, and avoiding questions
from several reporters concerning the possibility
of a Reagan/Bush ticket. Reagan 80?... Bush
81?...

It might have been only a day..

It might have been only a day

that our Hues touched,
But a day that won't be forgotten
no matter how much
For you and I touched each other

in a way that no one could,
Or is it better said

in a way that no one would.
That day, in many ways the same

for us each
We could have chosen to stay away

but instead we chose to reach.
Yes, it might have been only a day

that our Hues touched,

But a day that won't be forgotten

no matter how much.

Ron Olsen

Now some action is required

If this place

Held anymore

Spectral memories

It would clutch at me

And I would stand and stare

Back across the years

Through the tubing of a

Sweat-stained ball-point pen

Until I would have to remain

And in doing so defeat myself

In the purpose of education

So precious an ideal

Revered by many

But understood by so few

And the few understand

That my diploma, QPA, and fifty cents

Will purchase a cup of Sanka

So my time here has sifted through the hole

To be displaced by air
But I am educated

D.E. Griffith
